Day Two Hundred Eighty Six. October 12. Countdown 80 Days. Picture # 286. "Untitled". Just another butterfly in an already amazing year for butterflies in central Texas. Canon Rebel T3i, handheld. Canon 75-300mm lens. Focal length 230mm. f/5. ISO 400. Exposure 1/2000 second.
When I was in Florida recently, I went to Butterfly World thinking that I would get lots of nice pictures of butterflies. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate. It was overcast and raining off and on. The pictures I took without a flash are mostly blurry, and the ones I took with a flash are washed out. It was very frustrating.
ReplyDeleteHi Zhi Zhu. It is funny I lived in Florida for 44 years. But I would swear that there is a greater variety of bugs and butterflies in Texas than Florida. Almost all of my butterfly shots are with my 75-300mm lens and shot with natural light. My focus range on that lens is 54 inches so I can give the butterfly room to relax. I do not know if there is any science behind it, but I always wear a black shirt when shooting, once I stop moving the butterflies seem to stop seeing me. Usually ISO 400 but recently with the better noise reduction of the T3i ISO 800. I try to stay faster than 1/500 second to eliminate camera shake and bug movement. I have had very little luck with flash. It always blows out the colors. I read somewhere that a lot of the color in butterfly wings is light refraction. Might explain why the wings blow out but the flower looks fine. BTW Richards land is a great place to shoot butterflies.
